Meleth's Song: That's Where I'll Be (Vienna Teng)

Meleth is a fictional character in the Gondolin RPG. She is played by me. The opinions expressed in this journal are not my own, they are fictional and for roleplaying purposes only.

Meleth was born in Vinyamar some years before the city was abandoned and its people went to live in Gondolin. By human standards, she would have been around 9 or 10 years old at that time.

Meleth has dark hair and grey eyes, she inherited the looks of her Noldorin father Nolemíre, a follower of Turgon. In mind she resembles both her parents. Her father's love for knowledge and wisdom is found in her as well as the desire to create things - if she puts her mind to it, Meleth is skilled in a number of crafts, although she seldom finds the time for it. From her mother Aelothiel, a Sinda of Mithrim and remote relative of the famed Annael, Meleth inherited a rather quiet, shy nature as well as her love for the sea.

From childhood on Meleth was fascinated by the sea and could spend hours just watching the water and looking into the West, but she also made it a habit to gather little things the flood has brought; a wooden box that she believes to have come from the Blessed Realm has become one of her chief treasures. Her father's tales of Valinor have sparked the firm wish in her to see the Blessed Realm, the light of the Two Trees, unheeding that all light and beauty there had been greatly diminished since.

When Gondolin was built and Turgon and his people migrated there, she was reluctant to leave the sea, though the prospect of living in the likeness of Tirion exited her, but that fascination did not stay with her long.

In the city, she soon tried to gain as much knowledge about the Blessed Realm and Elven History as possible, to distract herself from the growing unrest that was caused by her absence from the sea. She became a follower and apprentice of Pengolodh when she came of age, until the sea-longing, (inherited from her mother) fully awoke in her heart. She turned away from her friends and became even more quiet than she already was. She spent hours sitting by the palace and looking at the Trees Turgon had forged, or by one of the many fountains, listening to the music of the water. When she did not do that, she walked on the Western walls of Gondolin looking out in the vain hope to once again see the shores of Belegaer, even though the Echoriath barred all hope of any glimpse of the outside lands.

She envied the messengers Turgon had send to find Valinor, not only because they were allowed to leave the city, but because they could see the sea again and she longed to accompany them.

Her father was slain in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and Meleth nearly faded from grief, because, in her parents' somewhat troubled relationship (both were traditionalists with regards to their respective culture and often clashed in their insistence of upholding not always compatible laws and customs), her father had become her focal point. Meleth inherited a house from him after the Nirnaeth, and left her mother's home, though her time was almost solely spent on the Walls now, where she met Idril one day, and was accepted into the service of the princess, to distract her from her feelings.

She became Idril's handmaiden and sometimes saw the Lords of the Houses, admiring them from afar, but always too shy to approach them. She secretly fell in love with Ecthelion, and though she thought it childish, Meleth learned to play the flute because of him.
Slowly but surely, with less time to ponder her feelings, she recovered, but still kept the habit to stare into the West when she did have time off her duty.

Recently, after having her hopes of ever winning Lord Ecthelion's heart shattered, she met Narminco, esquire of the Fountain Lord, and fell in love with him. Narminco proposed to her soon after. Their year of waiting was almost over when Narminco was killed in battle with the cat-demons that had found their way into Gondolin.

Almost mad with grief Meleth sought the help of Daeron to be able to say farewell to Narminco, and was haunted by Indil, a houseless one who has already possessed Meleth's body once. With the help of her friends and Lord Glorfindel the spirit was banished and put to rest.

Meleth's and Glorfindel's ways have since crossed again several times, a development that recently made her Glorfindel's wife and the Lady of the House of the Golden Flower. She is currently pregnant with Glorfindel's first child, a son to be named Ecthelion Estelvîr.

Widowed after Glorfindel's death in the Fall of Gondolin, she now considers it her duty to return to the sea and show it to Estelvîr. This, and her care for Tuilo in absence of his parents, are the things that keep her walking, as she is uncertain of Glorfindel's promised return despite her fervent wish for it to be true.
